The Accreditation Commission Wants YOU!
By Pam Lazor, Accreditation Commission Chair | May 20, 2019
Thank you to everyone who attended the workshop on Building Your Center’s Portfolio at the annual conference. I hope that you found it meaningful and helpful as you tell your center’s story. The PowerPoint of the workshop, as well as some additional materials have been uploaded to SharePoint. We will also be recording a modified version of the workshop for those who were not able to attend, as, while the slides are good, the commentary is better!
One of the important characteristics of the new accreditation process is that it is designed to build upon all that has come before, with a renewed emphasis on collegiality and collaboration, as well as fostering a more relational process. To truly make this happen, we are inviting all Educators and Spiritual Care Professionals to be a part of the new accreditation process in a variety of roles. Additionally, accreditation is becoming a national process, so our goal is to create a large database of persons who are interested in participating in the process. Here is a brief description of some of the ways that you can be involved:
National Site Team Chair (NSTC): The NSTC is the lead for the six-year site visit. They will coordinate with the center, help to form and educate the site team, and ensure that all of the elements of the visit happen as they should. An NSTC should have significant experience with accreditation (i.e. participated in multiple site visits, served on area committees, and have been a part of an accreditation visit to their own center). NSTCs are typically asked to chair 2-3 site visits a year, but certainly can do more if they want. As the lead, the NSTC receives a stipend for their work. Orientation, ongoing training, and support are provided to all NSTCs. To apply to become a National Site Team Chair, click here to complete the online application. Current NSTCs do not need to reapply.
Portfolio Reviewers: A portfolio reviewer will serve either to review a center’s portfolio as part of the yearly focused review or in preparation for the six-year site visit. This job can be done from your office or home, as all of the materials are online in SharePoint. Orientation, ongoing training, and support are provided to all reviewers. This is a great opportunity for professional development, as you will learn about the great things that centers are doing. Site Team Members: In addition to the NSTC and the practitioner (see below), each site team will also include an ACPE (Associate) Certified Educator. Site team members will review materials prior to arriving on site, where they will usually spend 1 ½ days visiting the center. All expenses are paid by ACPE. This is a great opportunity to see other centers in action and to provide collegiality and support to colleagues. Orientation, ongoing training and support are provided to all site team members. To add your name to the pool of site team members, click here to complete the online application.
Practitioner Members: Each site visit will also have a practitioner member. The practitioner is a person actively engaged in the practice of clinical pastoral care and spiritual support service. Qualifications for the practitioner include:
- Successful completion of four or more units of ACPE clinical pastoral education
- Professional practice of spiritual care for five years or longer
- Currently employed in a spiritual care position (does not need to be full-time)
For more information about the role of the practitioner on the site team, click here. Orientation, ongoing training, and support are provided. To add your name to the pool of practitioners for site visits, click here to complete the online application.
As a volunteer organization, we need you to help us uphold our standards and to ensure that ACPE continues to be The Standard for Spiritual Care and Education. We believe that getting involved in the accreditation process will be enriching for you, for your center, and for ACPE. If you have any questions about how you might be involved, please reach out to me.
