The Ohio State University’s Wexner Medical Center in Columbus, Ohio, is accepting applications for a three-CPE unit, year-long, full-time residency program (8/19/19 –8/12/20).  Eight chaplain residents work with a team of staff chaplains in this Level I Trauma Center, a 1300-bed academic medical center. Residents share on-call responsibilities, cover designated clinical units, and gain specialty experience. One previous accredited unit of CPE required; M.Div. or equivalent degree preferred. Memorial Hospital’s Mission for Clinical Pastoral Education

Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) is a multicultural and interfaith curriculum that teaches pastoral care through a process of interaction and reflection with persons in crisis. CPE is an experience -in -process education that has been shaped by history and yet remains responsive to present -day cultural developments.

Our mission is to educate ministers in the art and science of pastoral care according to the standards of the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE, Inc.), and to provide other educational events throughout the year that help ministers provide care to the people they serve.

Program Options

Residency: Memorial Hospital

  • First-year residency program
  • Four units of CPE over a 12 month period
  • Various opportunities to interface with the healthcare team
  • Five -day work week plus additional house coverage duties in rotation with peers and other chaplains
  • Stipend plus benefits
  • No tuition

Extended: Memorial Hospital & Hillcrest Medical Center

  • Intended primarily for clergy and laypersons who wish to further their theological education through CPE
  • Designed as a part -time education format so that fully -employed professionals can benefit from CPE
  • Twenty -week single unit offered January -May
  • Students meet for five hours each week for group learning and individual supervision
  • Participants provide 16 hours of clinical coverage each week
  • Programs are open to area ministers, seminary students and interested laypersons
  • Tuition required
  • Stipend paid for clinical hours

Summer Intensive Unit: Memorial Hospital & Hillcrest Medical Center

As a Chaplain Resident at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, you will provide spiritual care to patients, families and staff. You will also participate in a year of Clinical Pastoral Education to enhance the professional development of your spiritual leadership and pastoral/spiritual care skills.

We’re seeking a strong spiritual leader with a Bachelor’s Degree (Masters preferred) and a unit of Clinical Pastoral Education, or equivalent education. You must have previous pastoral care/spiritual care experience and be able to:

  • Engage in pastoral/spiritual caregiving to persons of any faith
  • Provide care and compassion that enables people to make decisions, accept loss, and cope with crisis situations
  • Function effectively in crisis or under stress
  • Provide theological and spiritual reflection with persons
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with staff, volunteers, patients, and families
  • Articulate and communicate the spiritual needs of patients to their care team and other chaplains/spiritual caregivers
  • Work collegially with community religious leaders
  • Engage in the Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) program with openness and intentionality
  • Ability to be mobile and function with overnight on-call responsibilities

Earn a Master of Science (MS) in Patient Counseling while completing a CPE residency at Virginia Commonwealth University.  In one year of CPE with us, you can successfully complete 3 units of CPE as well as receive your MS in Patient Counseling. Your curriculum, in addition to traditional CPE content, includes: semester-long courses in clinical ethics, chaplaincy research literacy, spiritual care leadership, and preparation for board certification as a chaplain.  VCU is an urban level-one trauma center offering experience in the emergency department, surgery, medicine, cardiology, pediatrics, women’s health, psychiatry, corrections (prison ministry) -- and in palliative care as well as organ donation protocols.  Our faculty is comprised of national and regional leaders in specialized ministry through publications, research/research grants, plenary and workshop presentations, and elected office.  

Resident salary is currently $47,500. Benefits include paid time off and low-cost healthcare insurance.

This second-year post-masters fellowship at the Southern Oregon Rehabilitation Center and Clinics (VA SORCC) is accredited by the ACPE.  According to VA policy, fellowship funding can be provided only to students who are U.S. citizens.  There are four fellowship positions available each year.
