Eight chaplain residents work with a team of staff chaplains in this Level I Trauma Center, a 1300 bed academic medical center. Earn a Master of Science (MS) in Patient Counseling while completing a CPE residency at Virginia Commonwealth University. At VCU, all of your CPE requirements earn both ACPE credit and academic credit. In your one year of CPE with us, you can successfully complete 3 units of CPE as well as receive your MS in Patient Counseling. Your CPE/Master of Science curriculum – in addition to traditional CPE content – includes; semester-long courses in clinical ethics, chaplaincy research literacy, spiritual care leadership, and preparation for board certification as a chaplain. Your clinical experience will be in an urban level-one trauma center offering experience in the emergency department, surgery, medicine, cardiology, pediatrics, women’s health, psychiatry, corrections (prison ministry) -- and in palliative care as well as organ donation protocols. Our faculty is comprised of national and regional leaders in specialized ministry through publications, research/research grants, plenary and workshop presentations, and elected office.

Resident salary is currently $47,500 but the stipend for 2017-2018 will be finalized later this spring. Benefits include paid time off and low-cost healthcare insurance.

The Sentara School of Clinical Pastoral Education in Norfolk, VA is accepting applications for two residency positions (CPE, Level II) to join our current students for the remainder of 2016-2017 residency year. We are only seeking students with previous units of ACPE-CPE. The residency will conclude on August 21, 2017.

The region's first Magnet Hospital, Sentara Norfolk General Hospital/Sentara Heart Hospital, a 525-bed, level I trauma, tertiary care center has nationally ranked programs for heart, diabetes and endocrinology. Sentara Leigh Hospital is a 250-bed facility specializing in orthopedic, cardiac, advanced imaging, gynecological and comprehensive breast care services. 

Our chaplain residents’ experience is enhanced by working with experienced staff chaplain mentors and through creative education/supervision from ACPE supervisor.

The Partnership for Clinical Pastoral Education: Morton Plant Mease Health Care (MPM) and Suncoast Hospice (SH)—located in beautiful Tampa Bay—Clearwater, FL—has opportunities available for residents:
