Located in the Texas Medical Center, Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center combines a diverse learning environment, innovative curriculum, and a creative three-person faculty, providing collaborative interfaith professional education.

FIRST YEAR CPE RESIDENCY

A full-time, year-long CPE program, designed primarily for clergy and religious professionals to learn and practice the art of spiritual care.  A previous Unit of CPE is required.  Residency provides three CPE Units

toward Board Certification.

SECOND YEAR CPE RESIDENCY

A full-time, year-long CPE program after a previous Residency Year. Residency II students address

Level II Outcomes while serving in a clinical specialty and prepare for Board Certification.

Second Year Fellowship in Chaplaincy Research 
Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center

This post- CPE, 12-month research fellowship will educate chaplains in the fundamentals of chaplaincy research with an emphasis on the impact of religion/spirituality (r/s) on healthcare and on religiously informed, relationally skillful chaplaincy. Areas of concentration include research design, recruiting subjects, data analysis, and application of research to chaplaincy.  At the end of the fellowship the Fellows will gain hands-on experience conducting qualitative and mixed methods research on r/s, including the use of r/s in medical decision making, coping with medical issues and the overall impact of r/s on medical care. The stipend is $40,000 a year with 24 days of PTO and it runs from 9/8/2020 to 8/27/2021. 

Qualifications:
Completed four units of clinical pastoral education (ACPE-CPE).
Articulation and integration of research literature into clinical practice and the impact this has made to their provision of spiritual/religious care. (See essay in application).
Three letters of recommendations, two of them explicitly addressing 1) your chaplaincy practice; 2) your academic ability
Previous experience in conducting research desirable.

Earn a Master of Science (MS) in Patient Counseling while completing a CPE residency at Virginia Commonwealth University.  In one year of CPE with us, you can successfully complete 3 units of CPE as well as receive your MS in Patient Counseling. Your curriculum, in addition to traditional CPE content, includes: semester-long courses in clinical ethics, chaplaincy research literacy, spiritual care leadership, and preparation for board certification as a chaplain.  VCU is an urban level-one trauma center offering experience in the emergency department, surgery, medicine, cardiology, pediatrics, women’s health, psychiatry, corrections (prison ministry) -- and in palliative care as well as organ donation protocols.  Our faculty is comprised of national and regional leaders in specialized ministry who are distinguished through publications, research/research grants, plenary and workshop presentations, and elected office.

2020-2021 CPE Residency Opportunities @ Kettering Health Network in Dayton Area of Ohio

Kettering Health Network, formerly Kettering Medical Center Network KHN), is a network of seven Dayton and Cincinnati area hospitals based in Dayton, Ohio. St. Mary’s Medical Center in Huntington, WV is accepting applications for a year-long CPE Residency beginning August 24, 2020 and ending August 20, 2021 ($1,000 tuition).

Residents will experience a variety of clinical responsibilities on a full continuum of medical services offered within the hospital and children hospital as well as working with agencies addressing recovery from substance use disorder with placements in the County Health Department’s Harm Reduction program as well as a local recovery program.   

A stipend of $35,568 is provided along with medical insurance available to the student at minimal cost.  One previous unit of CPE is preferred, along with a master’s degree in theology or an equivalent helping profession degree.
