Director of Spiritual Care

Responsible and accountable for department operations, fiscal/financial management, quality, service, environment of care/safety, risk management, and human resource management. Supports the organization’s vision, mission, goals and values. Plans, organizes, directs, coordinates and evaluates all phases of SC which includes ministry to inpatients, outpatients, caregivers/loved ones? and staff. Departmental responsibility includes policies and procedures; hiring, scheduling, staffing, orientation/continuing education of staff; and delivery of the SC programs. Oversees all staff functions for SC. Sets an expectation for the department of mutual respect, appreciation for diversity of staff, and need for input from staff regarding departmental decisions. Develops SC programs to respond to the needs of the patients, caregivers and staff. Quality of services must be monitored and there must be the ability to initiate continuous quality improvement activities and strive for excellence. Sets up multidisciplinary committee structures, which facilitate process improvement. There is responsibility for maintaining standards of accrediting bodies including The Joint Commission and Centers for Medicare/Medicaid. . Responsible for the CPE program that includes: coordination with the MCHS policies, recruitment of staff, selection of faculty; continued accreditation; and program evaluation. Is accountable to maintain the department budget, which includes efficient management of the resources. Various methods should be utilized to monitor the efficient functioning of the department, which includes: information databases, workload measurement, and timing of patient needs. Master of Divinity degree or the equivalent in Theology and/or in the field of human relations required.
Knowledge of spirituality principles and standards as they relate to healthcare. Successful spiritual and chaplain, supervisory and administrative experience. Excellent organizational skills. Capable of working with high emotional stress situations. Excellent teamwork skills and the ability to work with many communications styles. Demonstrated proposal and project management experience, continuous improvement project experience. High self-initiative. Excellent audiovisual and verbal presentation skills. Proficiency in basic computer skills (word processing, email, power point, excel, etc.) Excellent English and writing skills. 3-5 years in a supervisor/manager/director role with progressive management responsibility preferred.
Experience as a CPE Certified Educator is required.
Previous successful management experience as a supervisor/manager/director of a department for annual plan responsibility which includes departmental goal setting and strategic planning preferred. Ordination and/or ecclesiastical endorsement for service by appropriate faith group.
Certification with the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE) as a Certified Educator.
Certification with one or more of the following:
The Association of Professional Chaplain (APC)\ The National Association of Catholic Chaplains (NACC) United States Catholic Conference of Bishops (USCCB) The Association of Jewish Chaplains (AJC) (not required if certified as an ACPE Certified Educator). Hospice Spiritual Counselor (Chaplain) – Part-Time or Per Diem

Seattle, Washington

In this role, you will provide spiritual and emotional care to patients, families, and staff members in the home, inpatient facility, or Hospice Program through direct request or in coordination with community clergy. You will cover all of King and Snohomish counties primarily and serve as a backup for Kitsap and Pierce counties. You must be willing to traverse the entire western Washington service area as needed.

Qualifications Include:

  • At least one year of recent clinical pastoral experience
  • A master’s degree in theology with clinical pastoral education from an accredited school
  • Ordination or commissioning to function in a ministry of  pastoral care and ecclesiastical endorsement by a faith group
  • Association of Professional Chaplains or another Chaplain certification body required within three years of hire date
  • The ability to be open, flexible, and ecumenical in ministry
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, group process, and development skills
