ACPE News | June 22, 2020

#ACPEproud, August 3-7, 2020, is a week-long celebration, education, and advocacy event to encourage support of clinical pastoral education, spiritually integrated psychotherapy, and the spiritual care community. ACPE is proud of our students, graduates, and members. #ACPEproud will highlight the meaningful ways our members and accredited centers heal, strengthen, and transform people and communities in the US and across the globe.

During the week, ACPE will recognize our newly certified members and newly accredited centers, celebrate our awardees, install a new board chair, and honor our members who died during the last year. Throughout the campaign, ACPE will provide tools for you to share with your institutions and communities about the positive effects of spiritual care for patients and society.

Why #ACPEproud and Why Now?

Over the last few months, ACPE members and centers - in hospitals, hospice, congregations, older adult facilities, military settings, prisons, and schools – have risen to the challenges of our day. In these divergent settings, spiritual care professionals provided a calming presence and reminded people of their value, worth, and the importance of connection. To meet current challenges, spiritual care providers creatively deployed technology and videoconferencing to continue to serve, teach, and heal.

While ACPE members have shown remarkable adaptability, the association has also made powerful statements regarding the pervasiveness of systemic racism in our culture while developing resources and curriculum to address these injustices. Unfortunately, like most US-based institutions, ACPE has had to address systemic racism and white privilege woven into its fabric. At the same time, the practices of CPE provide important tools to help us move into a future that can contribute to the dismantling of these forces.

Now, more than ever, the world needs ACPE member’s leadership and care. #ACPEproud is a celebration of ACPE member’s current and past achievements and contributions. #ACPEproud is also a declaration of ACPE’s ongoing commitment to the transformation of human suffering.

CPE for Leaders: A Training Model for Healthcare Managers and Directors
Thursday, August 6 at 1:00p.m. EDT

In September 2018, the Mount Sinai Health System ACPE-accredited center launched its first CPE for Leaders program. This extended CPE unit brought together six managers/ directors in a program that was driven by the following goals: build leadership, communication, and conflict resolution skills; integrate mindfulness and empathy into leaders’ management style; and explore the values and philosophies that undergird leaders’ careers in healthcare. This workshop explores how CPE’s learning model can be leveraged to train leaders in core skills that foster collaborative, compassionate, and mindful leadership and discusses the findings of a qualitative study looking at the program’s outcomes.
