Dear Colleagues,

As Chair of the Board of Directors, it is my honor to welcome you to the 2019 Annual Conference in a place of expansive skies and hidden treasures – the desert of Arizona. The theme this year is “Exploring the Soul of Spiritual Care Education.”

What better environment for doing such sacred work than in the kind of surroundings that have inspired spiritual thinkers and artists for millennia? Many of us trace our theological and spiritual heritage to the many desert stories from our sacred texts, and from the “Desert Fathers and Mothers.” We also remember the artists such as Georgia O’Keefe, whose ability to see the desert more vividly than most puts to rest permanently the idea that deserts are full of death. In fact, they teem with life and diversity that we can barely comprehend.

From this vantage point, we will meet to do our holy work (clearly in more comfort than our ascetic forebears) and to renew our spirits for the challenging work ahead. The partnerships we have formed and are forming with our professional colleagues this past year have been invigorating and refreshing. We have much to discuss and discern together, so please come.

Whether you’re a veteran conference-goer or this is your first one, please make every effort to be there in person to help us continue to flesh out what it means to be The Standard for Spiritual Care and Education. I feel certain that our best work is still ahead of us. We have so many reasons to be hopeful.

I look forward to seeing you in Scottsdale in May!
