Certification as an ACPE Educator by ACPE is an earned privilege and responsibility. It is achieved by meeting the requirements for certification in the ACPE standards. ACPE certified educators are clinical pastoral educators who are academically prepared and who are authorized by a recognized faith group. They combine perspectives from theology and the behavioral sciences in conducting accredited programs of clinically supervised ministry education.

ACPE only certifies ACPE Educators. We do not certify chaplains or pastoral counselors. CPE is a prerequisite for certification as chaplain or pastoral counselor. If you would like to enroll in a CPE unit, please reference our directory of Accredited Centers to find a location near you.

For more information about becoming a certified chaplain or pastoral counselor, we recommend contacting the following organizations: Association of Professional Chaplains, National Association of Catholic Chaplains or National Association of Jewish Chaplains.

Welcome to the ACPE Certification Process

We created this space as a helpful overview of the steps and procedures as you navigate the ACPE certification process. It does not replace the essential resources, the old Certification Process Manual and its Appendices and the Certification Commission Policies and Procedures manual. If you are in the new certification process, please utilize the new Certification Manual.

Meeting Certification Committees

New for Certification in 2018, the usual functions of the Certification Commission are moving to strategically located hubs throughout the country. Space permitting, aspirants can meet sub-committees for Associate Educator or Certified Educator at hubs.

Additionally, beginning in 2018, the assessment of Theory Papers/Theory Integration Presentations will take place at each hub. There will be a limited number of theory papers/presentations that can be assessed at each hub, so in order to have your theory papers/presentation assessed, you must submit it to Sheilah Hawk before the deadline date listed for each hub below. Submissions will be accepted on a first come, first served basis. If a hub is already at capacity or if your submission is not on time, you will automatically be rolled over to the next hub.
