The following Nomination and Acceptance Speeches were presented at the Membership Meeting at the ACPE National Conference in Dallas, TX, on October 26, 2007.

Nomination Speech for Carlos Bell

ACPE President Elect

Dr. Conde-Frazier challenged ACPE at the Annual Conference in Dallas to become an “Empathic Organization” - one that would be “awake” to all that might threaten life even the threats that are within us. To become an organization that would promote and advance interdependence with all communities.

So today, I challenge us to elect a leader who will lead us with vision, integrity and purpose into the 21st century.

Carlos Bell is my nominee for this Great Task.

He is an African American Pentecostal Pastor. He has served as the first African American male to lead the Southwest Region. He has brought sensitivity, decisiveness and vision to our region.

He has encouraged the Southwest Region and its centers in the last year to contribute over $60,000 dollars to ACPE programs.

He has a history of leadership both as chair of our region, chair of regional certification committee, and Co-chair of this incredibly challenging and educational conference.

Carlos Bell has led ACPE programs at Memorial Houston, VA Dallas, and currently Baylor Medical Center. He has been honored as the National VA Chaplain of the Year in 1996 and the Distinguished Black Alumni of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in 2003.

He is the face of our future. His gentle, intelligent, equitable and grace-filled leadership will move us into a more diverse and life-giving organization. Carlos Bell is the leader who can take ACPE to the “empathic/interdependent” organization that Conde-Frazier described.

If you are ready for ACPE to fulfill our potential - You will join me in electing the first Pentecostal ACPE Supervisor and the 2nd African American in our 40 year history-as the next President of ACPE - You will elect - Carlos Bell.

Nomination for Sally Schwab for President, ACPE

I am pleased to stand before you today to nominate Sally Schwab as President-Elect of ACPE.

During my tenure as President of ACPE from 1998-99, I had the task of leading Board Meetings which included Bill Russell and Cal Brand who, as we all know, appreciate the opportunity to debate and speak their mind. In the midst of hearing many voices there was one voice I always paid attention to and that was Sally Schwab. Representing the South Central Region, Sally was a quiet member in comparison to her Presbyterian brethren. She would sit quietly with much attention in her listening. I always knew that when Sally wanted to speak, that her ideas, her response, her voice was going to be one that offered much thoughtfulness, a bright mind and a willingness to engage in what might be conflict or controversy.

Her quietness was not about a reticence to act, a lack of knowledge about the issue or a tendency towards shyness. Sally's demeanor represents what she brings to her work and to her organizational commitments: a high level of integrity, a desire to find solutions that make sense both philosophically and economically and, a quiet determination. Sally is one of those persons for which the descriptions solid presence and team player are most accurate.

She has served for 18 years in her institution as a leader; she has worked within the South Central Region in a variety of capacities on the Regional Board, Accreditation, Certification, and most recently the Chair of the Region. She worked at the national level as a member of the Board of Representatives, appointed to fill the unexpired term of Maxine Glaz and then elected on her own for 2 terms. She has helped plan national conferences and will again be leading that task as we anticipate meeting in the South Central Region in 2010.

Sally has the knowledge, the experience and the commitment to serve ACPE in leadership and I am delighted to place her name before you today as a candidate for President-Elect. Thank you.

Nomination Acceptance Response

I would like to thank Carole Somers-Clark and Tim Van Duivendyk, and members of the Southwest Region for supporting me in my candidacy as President of ACPE.

A core theoretical construct of my culture is story and song. Exactly 20 years ago in this city and region I was told by certain members of the dominant culture that I was not Black enough to enter CPE. I had the option of standing on the outside or dare to make a difference.

Ron Somers-Clark accepted me as an extended intern at Children's Medical Center . I later pursued further training at the then Memorial Hospital System in Houston with Tom Cole, Don Bratton, Tim Van Duivendyk, and Deborah Whisnand. I became the first Black to pursue supervisory training in the city of Houston . The Southwest Region, REM, and Certification Commission nurtured my professional development and I embedded in my heart the Old Negro Spiritual, “We Shall Overcome.”

My competency as a leader in ACPE has been proven by service as the Southwest Region REM Chair, Certification Chair and Commission member, current Regional Chair, and Co-Chair of the 2007 Annual Conference. The hallmark of my service has been organization, professionalism, and ability to align individuals and groups.

The constructive critical purchase of my being the eldest of eight children reared in the inner city and person of color is that when one moves from oppression to liberation, he/she can become the oppressor and repeat the mistakes of the past. Therefore, the African concept of “we-ness” is an integrative construct of my servant leadership and desire to become President of ACPE. “We-ness” is another word for community or togetherness.

The centerpiece of my platform is the ACPE 2010: Into the Future strategic plan. We have an opportunity to deepen relationships with the Veterans Affairs, Military, and international organizations. The vision and success of the Development Committee will allow us to fulfill the strategic plan and a brighter tomorrow.

Standing with me are Harry Simmons, President of REM, two graduates of Baylor's supervisory education program a white female CPE supervisor, Director of her own CPE program and Regional Accreditation Chair with the VA, and international Associate supervisor from Ghana, West Africa now at Duke University Medical Center, a Latina supervisory resident, and the 2007-08 Baylor residents that represent gender, cultural, and faith group diversity. My vision for ACPE is symbolized by this community.

In conclusion, my goal and passion is to bring a pastoral presence and implement the work done on the regional and national level to the Presidency. Together “We Shall Overcome.” Thank you.

Nomination Acceptance Response

I accept the nomination for President of the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education. I am honored and humbled that I have been invited to consider this awesome work. Once I work through some feelings about inadequacy, I am inspired by the possibilities of relationships and new opportunities to create, enhance and sustain the vision and mission of our beloved ACPE.

I entered the United Methodist ministry early in my life and have been ordained since 1978. The call to serve has been shaped and renewed again and again as I have moved from parish ministry to chaplaincy, to CPE supervision and department leadership. I did my clinical pastoral education training at Saint Luke's Hospital and Baptist Medical Center in Kansas City, MO. My first position as CPE supervisor and staff chaplain was at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Kansas City, MO. I began my work at Heartland Regional Medical Center in 1989 and have functioned as a department director for the spiritual care department which includes clinical pastoral education. I have also worked as the department director for the Hands of Hope Hospice program and developed the palliative care consultation team at Heartland Regional Medical Center.

I have represented the South-Central region on the ACPE Board of Representatives for twelve years (1992-2004). I have been the Chair of the South Central Region, just completing my term as the past chair on Regional Council. I am a member of the regional certification committee.

Prayerful discernment and collegial consultation leads me to say Yes to the decision to accept this nomination. I have a poet's heart and recall an e.e. cummings poem about the eternal yes. “i thank you God for most this amazing day:…and for everything which is natural which is infinite which is yes.”

I will bring to the office of ACPE president the ability to listen with empathy and hear the meanings being communicated. I am a facilitative, conciliatory, flexible and encouraging leader. I seek to bring persons and organizations together for common purposes while recognizing the values of diversity and healthy differentiation. I believe in the outcomes and strategies of the current strategic plan and pledge my support and leadership. I am equipped to lead with competence and compassion what I perceive the future work of our organization is. I have the faith, wisdom and integrity to respond to the not yet known that is also our future.

Thank you for your trust in me and I ask that you support me in the process toward becoming the President of the ACPE!
